🌍 Convoro has joined the fediverse — Federation is here

The most ambitious item on our roadmap has shipped. Convoro communities can now speak ActivityPub, the open protocol behind Mastodon, Lemmy, and the wider fediverse — and it didn't ship small. Federation arrived in two phases, and both are live.

Your community is still yours — your server, your rules, your data. It's just no longer an island.

📡 Phase 1 — your community, followable from anywhere

Every federated Convoro community is now discoverable and followable from across the fediverse. Someone on Mastodon or Lemmy can follow your community and see your discussions arrive in their own feed — on their app, on their server, with no Convoro account required.

Think about what that means for reach: the fediverse is millions of people, and your forum can now show up in their timelines the same way any Mastodon account does. Your community's front door just opened onto a much bigger street.

🔁 Phase 2 — a real conversation, both ways

Being followable is only half a conversation, so Phase 2 makes it two-way:

• Replies flow back — when someone on Mastodon replies to your discussion, it arrives in the thread, where your members can respond.

• Likes carry across — appreciation from the fediverse lands on your posts.

• Cross-posting — share discussions outward to the network without copy-paste gymnastics.

Your forum stays the home of the conversation. The fediverse becomes the neighborhood around it.

🏡 Why this matters

We've said from the start that Convoro exists because communities deserve to be owned, not rented. Federation is the second half of that argument.

The big platforms won by being networks — people went where everyone already was, and self-hosted communities gave up that network effect in exchange for ownership. Federation ends that trade-off. A network of independent communities that can talk to each other is a network too — one that nobody can acquire, paywall, or shut down. And for a brand-new community, it solves the cold-start problem: you're reachable by the entire fediverse on day one, instead of shouting into an empty room.

🛡️ On your terms

Like everything in Convoro, federation is managed from your admin panel — no config files, no terminal. It's your call whether your community federates at all, and your moderators remain in charge of what appears on your forum. Connecting to the network never means surrendering control of your corner of it.

Update to the latest release, head to your admin panel, and switch federation on. Then search for your community from a Mastodon or Lemmy account and hit follow — that moment is worth experiencing yourself.
